My New Bag

Did you happen to notice the bag I was sporting in my post about Spelga? It just another of the small things I've been working on recently and got finished.

It’s basically just a big Granny square (30 rounds in this case but you could do anything from 26 to 30) with the sides gathered in; two are less gathered and are for the handles to be attached and the other two, which are more tightly gathered, make the mouth to allow the bag to open. I found the pattern on the internet years ago but can’t remember where. The bag is lined with cotton fabric and has two big pockets.

I thought this big button would match the bag well.

I used Rowan Cotton Glacé for the Granny square (except the aubergine which is Rico cotton) – yarn that’s been in my stash for at least five years. There are seven different colours but one of these (the yellowish colour called Ochre) is repeated between each of the other colours. The two edges for the handles are crocheted in Persimmon and the other two edges and tab for the button are done in Heather. The remaining colours used in the bag are Shoot (the light green), Ivy (I think this is the dark green otherwise it has been discontinued) and Sky (the blue). Handles came from my local wool shop in Rathfriland.

I really love my new bag!

This is another small crochet project that I’ve worked on recently and is now finito.

Hope you like it! It's really easy to make; it would make a great present, wouldn't it? If it was possible to get smaller handles I think it would be nice made about half this size too.

I'm thinking of other bags to make now. Crocheted....knitted....even sewn. So many ideas, like beautiful butterflies flitting about in my head, but nowhere near enough time to make everything I'd like to! It's so frustrating.....but kind of exciting too.

It's lovely to see I have some new followers. Thanks for joining in. Thanks too for all the great comments that have been left. It's reassuring to know that I'm not alone in my hanging-out-washing foibles. I love it when you leave a comment - so go on - make my day.

  1. It looks great, Gillian. Well done. I've been thinking about making a bag too, just watching for a good sale on the handles because they can be a little pricey.

  2. Well done, Gillian! One can never have too many bags, especially if you make them yourself!

How large was the size of the crochet square before you sewed it together?

I like what you did with the alternating colour rows, choosing one colour as the dominant one! It brings it all together somehow. And the lining contrasts but complements it all nicely!

Handles aren't so cheap here! You were lucky!

The bag looks large enough to stash a half finished blanket inside it, ideal for taking projects along! Or use it as a handbag and you can easily pop to the shops and fit in a loaf of bread, tea and milk!!!!

    Lovely!

    1. Can you knit? Crochet is no harder. I've taught lots of people to crochet who said they'd never be able to do it.
